Ten years ago today I started the one of the scariest journeys of my life! Aged 30, having been told I was never going to be good at anything, having been through some pretty horrific relationship experiences (and still in one) as a mum of five, and struggling (read failing) self employed business woman, I started a college course on photography, having never really finished high school, what was someone like me thinking? I wasn't good enough for this, I should be at home with my kids, or earning money, and damn did it feel selfish to do something that was 100% just for me.Who could have predicted where that would go? I thought to myself, I’ll be really pleased if I pass and at least will have achieved something in my life - you can’t imagine the shame of not even having any GCSE’s to your name, I was plagued with it back then, now I know that they don’t really mean shit, but it’s hard when you think something matters THAT much. I didn’t imagine I’d go much further than finishing the evening course and carrying on as before, parenting, putting up with crap from the now ex, zero aspirations and not really thinking of any future for myself. I didn’t realise how photography would change my life, so so completely!I finished the course and passed, but still had absolutely no self worth, so I took the exact same course again, not to improve grades because it was only a pass or fail course, but because I’d found it was a way of making time for myself, a precious few hours every week where I could begin to find myself, it was only my subconscious that realised it, I’d yet to acknowledge that this was what was happening. There was no way I could conceive of doing the same course a third time, that really would be madness, so I was brave, I applied for a degree, thinking ok, if I get in great, I don’t have to do it, that will be too difficult, but I got offered a place! Ok, I’ll do the first term, I don’t have to finish it…….I’ll continue in the comments
